What specifications do the PCs require?

Q: What happens when the administrator or the operator loses the card or it is stolen ?

Being protected by a confidential code (PIN number) defined by the owner, in case of loss or theft the card is useless.

When having a maximum of three attempts to guess the pin, it is disabled on the third invalid attempt.

This way the information is left protected.

Q: What happens when the user loses the card or it is stolen ?

In case of loss or theft, the units saved on the card will be lost, since the card does not come protected by the pin code.

Nevertheless, the access to the electronic mail will be left protected by the personal password of the mail server.

Q: How do you install the smart-card reader ?

The card reader is installed like a mouse in port PS/2 or serial.

Different internal and external models are also available.

Q: Are there royalties to pay on the consumption of units when acquiring the I-Card Access 2000 system ?

No, There are no royalties bound to the consumption of units.

In addition, the administrator is free to fix the sale price of the units.

Q: What time of life has a user card ?

The user card is valid until it is physically damaged.

Q: Do I-Card Access 2000 cards function for every client who has bought the I-Card system ?

No, every client is identified by their own PIN.

For instance, cards sold to a cybercafe with a client's code XXX could not be used by a hotel with a client's code YYY.

This way, private networks of I-Card access could be set up, being, for example, ideal for hotel chains with the same client's code.

How many locations are equipped with the I-Card Access system ?

I-Card Access was commercially launched in September 96 and is already installed in more than 2,000 PCs connected to the Internet in 24 countries 65,000 cards are currently in use.

Q: Is it possible to use desktop applications with I-Card Access ?

Yes, I-Card Access is an open system which controls not only Internet applications, but also desktop programs, or games working under MS DOS.

Q: Does I-Card Access support printing ?

Yes, the users can print from any of the applications that are made available to them.

Q: When are units debited ?

The debit of units start from the moment the user opens an application.

The user card customization is free and does not consume any units.

The user card can be inserted into the smart card reader without debiting units from the card, as long as the user does not open an application.

Q: Can the unit debit be adjusted for every application ?

Yes, the administrator can determine just how fast units are debited for each application chosen to make available to the users.

That way, certain applications can be made more or less expensive.

It is even possible to make applications free of charge (no unit debit) .

Q: Who reloads the cards in units and how do you reload ?

The operator can reload user cards using the special operator card and PIN code.

Reloading is very simple and does not require any specific technical expertise.

It can be handled at a hotel front desk for instance.

Q: Can the user load data on the hard disk ?

The files on the hard disk are write protected so that the user may not modify, delete or rename these files.

However, a specific temporary folder is accessible and allows the users to save their files on the computer during their session.

Apart from this, users are able to save on a floppy disk if they wish.
